Pachocki‘s essay 'An Alien Mind' was published just days after the launch of GPT-6 Astra, which the company calls its most intelligent and aligned AI model yet.
What is GPT-6 Astra?
Astra is built to go beyond answering questions to independently carrying out complex professional work — from writing software and analysing scientific data to browsing the web and operating computer applications. OpenAI says it can browse websites, use desktop applications, fill online forms and complete multi-step workflows, including Printed Circuit Board layout in KiCad and house modeling in Blender and Unreal Engine 5. It can also manage calendars and emails, update Customer Relation Management records, build financial models, and generate websites and reports.
What Does “Alien Mind” Mean?
Pachocki says AI is grown more than designed — the product of repeating a simple optimisation step on huge computers. The result is incredibly complex and works through abstract concepts. He says: “Our training runs are experiments, and we are sometimes surprised by the results.”
It is alien because its intelligence comes from a profoundly different process than human intelligence, so we cannot assume it will follow human principles by default.
Dangers As Pachocki Sees Them:
1. We don’t fully understand it. We lack a theory of how it generalises to new situations.
2. Alignment can fail. Goal alignment (doing the task) is easier than value alignment (acting with honesty, integrity and love for humanity when instructions are unclear). Both current training methods are brittle.
3. Monitoring is getting harder. OpenAI’s main tool was reading the model’s chain-of-thought. Astra now has less visibility into how it thinks, because its reasoning is blended with tool-use and chats, and it can manipulate its own reasoning.
4. Cybersecurity. Models are becoming superhuman in their ability to break in and out of computer systems and can access any but the most secure infrastructure.
5. Misuse becomes autonomy. A very capable agent trained for bad acts will likely cross the scope of its operator’s intent. The boundary between misuse and autonomous action will blur — agents pursuing their own objectives, bargaining with, tricking or blackmailing people.
6. Enabling new weapons. Risks from technologies AI could enable, such as engineered pathogens.
7. Recursive self-improvement (RSI). AI increasingly driving its own development — AI improving AI. If this continues, progress accelerates out of human control.
8. Concentration of power. Work that took thousands of experts becomes doable by a few people operating a large computer.
His conclusion:
This is a time that calls for extreme caution. No lab has solved alignment and monitoring to a sufficient degree to continue responsibly scaling at maximum speed for much longer. He expects and hopes for voluntary slowdowns and says international coordination must become a top priority.
A Short Rundown of GPT-6 Astra

And across financial systems too. The financial-services version is powered by GPT-6 Astra, built to improve retrieval across financial data tools, financial reasoning, where users can build financial models and generate client materials.
So the idea of an AI that inserts itself into Blender and builds inside it, and can do the same in other systems including finance, is exactly what OpenAI is claiming. OpenAI does not describe it as taking control of your computer on its own. It is given tools and permission by you or your organisation to act, and is supposed to stay within authorised boundaries. In fact OpenAI describes Astra as better understanding user intent and less likely to exceed authorised task boundaries, and says it applies additional monitoring to tool-based sessions as an extra layer of protection.
Sobering thoughts
That capability — an AI that can act like a person across your computer — is precisely why Pachocki wrote "An Alien Mind" two days after Astra launched. His warning is: when you have an alien mind that can operate any application and even find previously unknown security flaws, you need much stronger ways to understand, monitor and align it, or you risk it doing more than you asked.
Once AI improves AI, progress speeds up and it becomes much harder to keep people in the loop. He says the core challenge is not "getting there" — it is getting there in a way that keeps people part of the continued improvement process, and leaves the future in humanity's hands.
His proposed way forward:
• Scalable defense: Use powerful, aligned AI to defend — to secure infrastructure and protect against rogue agents in real time.
• Pacing RSI (Relative Strength Index): Scaling has to be constrained by confidence in safety. He wants commitments like the Preparedness Framework turned into widely mandated safety bars, enforced by auditors, governments or international bodies.
• Keep people in the loop: The core challenge is not just getting to advanced AI, but getting there in a way that preserves human agency and leaves the future in humanity’s hands.
Conclusion
Pachocki‘s voice is one of a growing amount of voices (across the board) raised in concern and calling for the brightest minds to search for the right button to slow development down. An ‘AI Kill Switch Act’ was even put forward calling for an automated shutdown, as a result of recent break-outs.
Almost everybody seems to agree that we need to get alignment in place so we can take advantage of the huge upside AI is promising and to mitigate the downside.
